Nothing is more essential to safe driving than using high-quality brakes. The problem most people run into is there are so many different types of brakes available that choosing the right one can be difficult. Fortunately, even a basic understanding of the different types of brake pads available will make the decision-making process much easier.

One of the most common brake materials is ceramic. Ceramic brake pads are primarily used for street use. Street use is considered to be less demanding and includes activities like daily driving of cars and light duty trucks. A big reason ceramic brake are popular is because they allow for quiet breaking. While they do technically make a sound, it is generated a frequency higher than a human hearing range. The only drawback is ceramic pads are typically more expensive than their counterparts although they can compensate for this because they reduce the amount of wear and tear caused to brake rotors.

Another popular option is semi metallic pads. These pads are typically made from 30 percent to 65 percent metal. The metal used is typically still wool, wire, or copper. While they are considered to be extremely durable they can wear down brake rotors faster. Additionally, they are a poor choice for people who are constantly driving in very low temperatures.

The third option goes by many names ranging from non-asbestos organic to carbon fiber. The characteristic they all have in common is they are made from some type of organic material such as fiber, Kevlar, glass, or rubber. This type of brake is softer than all the other options which are why they do not create much noise. At the same time, the softness also makes them more prone to wearing out faster. They also tend to generate more dust than other types of brake pads.

When purchasing brake pads, there are several characteristics to keep in mind to get the best value. A key characteristic to look for is anti-fading properties. Brake fade occurs when brakes get to hot and lose their stopping power. This can be extremely dangerous especially when driving down a steep decline or hauling a heavy load. Another feature to consider is longevity. Since everyone drives a little bit differently it is impossible to predict exactly how long brake pads will last for any individual. At the same time, certain brake pads have a proven track record of lasting longer than their competition. While they may be more expensive they will not need to be replaced nearly as often.
