Whether you're going for a day's walk on a mountainside or a month-long expedition, it's important to make sure you have the right equipment. From walking boots to waterproof jackets, you need to be prepared for any eventuality, particularly with the unpredictable British weather.

You may think you have thought of everything, but the last thing you want is to get halfway up a mountain and realise you have forgotten something. And don't just think about the equipment you'll need when you're actually walking or climbing, think about what you might need should you be pitching a tent for the night. If you have spent a long day walking then chances are you will be looking forward to a nice sit down with some food and a hot cup of tea. But you won't get very far if you don't ensure you have a stove, replacement gas canisters and the relevant cooking and eating equipment.

You might also want to consider items will look after your safety and security. A first aid kit, or at least some first aid supplies are essential and, depending on where you are or what time of year it is, so is insect protection. Purchasing padlocks and a money pouch may also come in handy and keep your valuables secure.

There also may be some items that you would never have thought of taking with you. Your walking boots may be all very well and good but have you tired the Vibram toe shoes? This unique footwear is perfect for a variety of activities such as walking, climbing and kayaking. Also, how about compression sacks? These vacuum sacks are ideal if you are carrying soft items that need to be compressed down. Space in your rucksack will likely be at a premium, so these might come in very handy.

There is more to consider than you think when it comes to such activities, and it is important you take the necessary precautions.
