Erectile dysfunction, differently called male impotence, is the recurrent inability to attain or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.
Some men experience chronic erectile dysfunction, and others have erection problems at times. Regular erectile dysfunction can cause emotional and relationship problems, and often results in lowered self-esteem and confidence. It makes defining the health problem and estimating its incidence difficult. Estimates range from 15 to 30 mln, depending on the definition used.

The vast majority of male sexualproblems are triggered by physical factors, for instance blood vessel, nerve and abnormalities in the penile area.
In older men, ED usually has a physical cause, for example diseases, injuries, or side effects of medications. Any disorder that brings on an injury to penile nerves and blood vessels has the potential to trigger ED. Incidence increases with age: about 5% of 40-year-olds and 15-25% of 65-year-olds experience ED. Still, it is not an irrevocable part of aging.

Being unable to perform in bed has an adverse impact on man's self-esteem and confidence. More than that, it also badly damages his relationship with a partner.
According to the survey, in 1985 for every 1, 000 men in the USA, 7.7 appointments with a physician were made for ED. By 1999, that figure had nearly tripled. The increase occurred gradually, presumptively since therapies, for example vacuum and drug therapies became more easily available.
In general, ED is treatable regardless of age, and awareness of the fact has been growing. Today more males search for help and return to normal intimate life due to advanced, efficient therapies for ED. Depending on the severity and brings on of the erection problem, there are oral, mechanical, injection and surgery therapies.
One way to improve erectile dysfunction is to make some alterations in lifestyle. For some men, selecting a healthier life-style, such as quitting smoking, exercising regularly, and reducing stress, may be all that is needed to find relief. For those who require more intensive therapy, life-style changes alongside other treatments can further help.
